Case Study

The GDA (Guidelines Daily Amounts) booklet

The GDA (Guidelines Daily Amounts) booklet

The brief:

The Food and Drink Industry Ireland (FDII) wanted to produce a flyer to explain what Guidelines Daily Amounts (GDA) meant, how to understand them, the benefits and how they are important to the consumer. The booklet was to be distributed to industry and government stakeholders, home economics students, and to general consumers, illustrating its broad appeal to different audiences.

The design:

The structure itself was simple and natural; it was based on the shape of one of the GDA information panels. This made the booklet immediately stand out from other items of literature. We also made it more user-friendly with the pocket size format. The text was ordered by starting with an explanation of GDAs, to why they offer useful dietary information, to showing typical GDA labelling on various food portions. The text was succinct and clear to read and balanced with montaged images which allowed a broad range of stories to be shown. Pastel colours denoted the different sections and the overall design gave the booklet a warm, easy to read and calm tone.

The response:

The client was very satisfied and it received considerable recognition in the food sector for its focus on the facts about GDA labelling. It was a successful combination of well-written text and a fresh design format, resulting in a clear and informative booklet. The booklet's design concept, which utilised the unique shape of the GDA panel, was adapted by the client's advertising agency in the development of an above-the-line consumer information campaign.

"We were extremely satisfied with the GDA information booklet. Forbes Design really exceeded our expectations for a finished product that maintained a conservative edge, while still achieving a friendly tone with real stand-out.

Not an easy task! The feedback that I received was enormously positive – people really connected with the publication and it had perhaps the best level of recall of all the publications that I have ever been involved in.

Forbes Design never disappoints and always manages to come up with something fresh. For that reason, we will use them time and time again."
